WHEN TO REFER A CHILD TO A DEVELOPMENTAL PEDIATRICIAN
For detection of developmental delay in the infant and child. Areas of delay to consider are speech and language delay, motor delay, global delay and delays in social communication. Clinical assessment leads to identification of potential causes and directs appropriate intervention.
Meet Dr. Saunders
Developmental Paediatrics is a relatively new subspecialty in the growing list of paediatric subspecialties.
A Developmental Paediatrician works collaboratively with a team of professionals including psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists and social workers and has a wide knowledge of educational options.
Developmental Paediatricians understand that children’s development and behaviour happen first and foremost in the context of the family. They seek to understand the family’s view of the problem and the effect of the child’s problem on the family. They advocate for their patients by working closely with schools, pre-schools and other governmental and non-governmental agencies involved with developmental care and education.
